VA education benefits are authorized to veterans and qualifying dependents. Each education benefit program is identified by a chapter designator. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will determine your eligibility.
VA education payment rates are determined for each Federal fiscal year.
Guidelines for Receiving Education Benefits
-
The VA requires schools to evaluate and report transfer credit from all prior educational experiences. Therefore, official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions that you have attended are needed to process your enrollment certification.
-
In order to remain eligible for VA benefits, you must maintain satisfactory academic progress.
-
You will be certified only for courses that apply toward your degree audit.
-
You may not repeat courses that have been previously completed with a passing grade at Hawkeye or at any other previously attended college and receive benefits for those courses.
-
You must notify Hawkeye's veterans services coordinator if you alter your registration in any way. This includes: Dropping or adding a class, terminating school, changing programs or majors, or any other changes that might affect your payment status.
-
You must notify the VA office at 1-888-442-4551 of any address change.
Verifying Your Enrollment Status
National Guard and Reserve Process
If you receive education benefits under Chapter 30 (Active Duty), Chapter 1606 (Selected Reserve) you must verify your enrollment status to the VA each month to receive payment.
You will be able to verify your enrollment once the VA has completed processing your claim. Processing time is approximately 10–12 weeks.
To verify your enrollment, call 1-877-823-2378.
- Verification must be done on the last day of the month or after. You are verifying for the month that has just ended.
- You will need your Social Security Number and your zip code.
If you have Direct Deposit set up, your payment is generally in your account within 3–5 business days. If you are receiving your payment by mail, it will take about 5–7 business days.
Veteran Post 9/11 Process
If you receive education benefits under Chapter 33 you must verify your enrollment status to the VA each month to receive your monthly housing stipend.
Students using Chapter 33 benefits will have the option to verify their enrollment using text message or email. If these options are unavailable you can call the VA Education Hotline at 888-442-4551.
